The Club owes its existence to eight Rotherham men, who decided to form a Golf Club on the South side of the town. The problem of obtaining a suitable site for the course was finally solved when, in 1912, Sir George Sitwell, Bart., offered part of his beautiful estate and agreed to bear the cost of building the course, providing a minimum of 100 members could be guaranteed by the time nine temporary holes could be brought into play. More than 100 were enrolled within a week and in May 1913 the Club started with nearly 200 members.

The course was designed by Dr Alister McKenzie, who some years later went on to assist in course design of the famous Augusta National home of the US Masters.

This old photograph opposite shows the18th green as originally laid out.

The original wooden clubhouse in Shrogswood, a photograph of which hangs in the Club entrance hall, was destroyed by fire on Christmas Day 1930. Lord Milton officially opened the replacement, a handsome building, in a commanding position overlooking the course, in 1931.

1970 saw an extension, whereby the veranda was converted to be part of the lounge and the locker rooms were extended to accommodate the increased membership.

The next milestone in the history of the Club was the purchase of the course, by the members, from Sir Reresby Sitwell Bt. DL in 1979/80.

Further extensions, some twenty years on from the first, were opened by Sir Reresby and Lady Sitwell on Saturday 14thJuly 1990. These extensions, planned around a survey of members in 1986, have provided an extended 19th and Ladies Room, additions of a Snooker Room, extra Locker Room space, a Committee Room, the Professional’s Shop, Entrance Hall, a large Office and a most delightful Dining Room capable of seating up to 100 diners comfortably.

The final addition to date is that of the balcony, opened in July 1999.

These most functional and imaginative extensions blending well into the previous building have resulted in a Clubhouse of spacious proportions, standing proud with a commanding view of the course and beyond.
